I just read an old entry of mine in a quasi recipe/diary that dates back to August 2001. At that time I wrote about how I felt a sense of joy and still feel to this day about food and the creative process of preparing a meal.
In my career along with being an alternative physician, I had the great fortune of doing improvisational theater professionally. My wife and I had a wonderful time with so many talented comedic performers. I mention this because it is in the spirit of improvisation that all of my time in the kitchen is centered. Improvisational cooking is essentially what we all do; we just haven’t put a name on it. Think of being hungry, foraging for food and realizing the limited choices before you. It is in this challenged moment that the creative juices flow and a new recipe is born.
I am of the mindset that given an understanding of the basics in cooking, knowing the chefs essentials we have limitless possibilities in making a delicious meal. First of all, find that place of awareness in yourself allowing aromas, visuals, tastes, to fill your senses and spirit. Every movement and choice is now grounded in this centered place of harmony and love.
Back then, I wrote down what I thought were some important tools to have in your kitchen. Always have a sharp knife,Seasoned wooden chopping board, quality fresh ingredients, the best pan and pot you can afford, an open bottle of delicious wine, an apron and surround yourself with love – music, family, or friends. Well, as I look back that’s still a good list. The main ingredient to every dish is staying relaxed, have fun and everything will taste better. Oh and you look so cool when you’re relaxed and in control.

When you suffer from heartburn, it can feel as if everything you eat causes a trigger to the pain. Knowing the foods to avoid acid reflux is one way to begin actually enjoying eating again. One of the best tips is to spend some time paying attention to the foods that cause you to get heartburn. Many people do this by keeping a food diary. They keep track of the foods they eat and take note of the effects the foods they eat have on them.
So, for instance, say you have a salad, steak and baked potato for dinner. If you notice you suffer from heartburn afterward, you can slowly eliminate the foods to avoid acid reflux, when one of them triggers your discomfort. This is one of the best ways to keep reflux from plaguing you every time you eat.
Eat Less Food
It’s also important to watch how much you consume. It seems that people just don’t get the link between eating too much and heartburn, but they really should because when your stomach is too full, it needs extra acid to digest all that food, but there is no room for it to go. This causes it to creep back into the esophagus in many cases and this is a major contributor to the problem. By not eating so much, you will allow your stomach the room it needs to digest your food without the discomfort. This might be one of the most commonly overlooked tips when it comes to obvious foods to avoid acid reflux. The simple solution is eat less.
In addition to watching your portion sizes, many health care professionals are finding that when you suffer from acid reflux, one of the triggers might be how often you eat and what you eat when you sit down. So, instead of three meals and two snacks daily, consider eating six small meals a day, which are well rounded, so that your stomach has an easier time digesting your foods.
By following these tips of not over eating and keeping a food diary, you will soon be able to pin point the foods to avoid acid reflux. Even though there are foods to take into consideration, often it is your eating pattern that is the culprit. So, take the time to change some of your lifestyle habits that might be making you have heartburn and acid reflux and find that you feel better and are happier overall.
