Diary of Samuel Pepys January 1659 1660. Review

Diary of Samuel Pepys January 1659 1660. Overview

[The year did not legally begin in England before the 25th March
until the act for altering the style fixed the 1st of January as the
first day of the year, and previous to 1752 the year extended from
March 25th to the following March 24th. Thus since 1752 we have
been in the habit of putting the two dates for the months of January
and February and March 1 to 24--in all years previous to 1752.
Practically, however, many persons considered the year to commence
with January 1st, as it will be seen Pepys did. The 1st of January
was considered as New Year's day long before Pepys's time. The
fiscal year has not been altered; and the national accounts are
still reckoned from old Lady Day, which falls on the 6th of April.]

Blessed be God, at the end of the last year I was in very good health,
without any sense of my old pain, but upon taking of cold.

[Pepys was successfully cut for the stone on March 26th, 1658. See
March 26th below. Although not suffering from this cause again
until the end of his life, there are frequent references in the
Diary to pain whenever he caught cold. In a letter from Pepys to
his nephew Jackson, April 8th, 1700, there is a reference to the
breaking out three years before his death of the wound caused by the
cutting for the stone: "It has been my calamity for much the
greatest part of this time to have been kept bedrid, under an evil
so rarely known as to have had it matter of universal surprise and
with little less general opinion of its dangerousness; namely, that
the cicatrice of a wound occasioned upon my cutting for the stone,
without hearing anything of it in all this time, should after more
than 40 years' perfect cure, break out again." At the post-mortem
examination a nest of seven stones, weighing four and a half ounces,
was found in the left kidney, which was entirely ulcerated.]

I lived in Axe Yard,

[Pepys's house was on the south side of King Street, Westminster;
it is singular that when he removed to a residence in the city, he
should have settled close to another Axe Yard. Fludyer Street
stands on the site of Axe Yard, which derived its name from a great
messuage or brewhouse on the west side of King Street, called "The
Axe," and referred to in a document of the 23rd of Henry VIII--B.]

having my wife, and servant Jane, and no more in family than us three. My
wife . . . . gave me hopes of her being with child, but on the last day

Rutka’s Notebook: A Voice from the Holocaust Review

Rutka Laskier, whose diary entries fill this book, was only 14-years-old when she perished together with most of her family in the infamous Nazi extermination camp, Auschwitz. Only her father Yaacov Laskier survived the Holocaust and he would go on to remarry and have a second family. It was only decades after the Second World War, in the year 2006, that an 82-year-old Polish woman revealed a secret she had been keeping – Rutka’s diary which was actually a notebook filled with her observations of the horrors occurring around her in the village of Bedzin, Poland. Though it is very brief, covering only four months in 1943(Jan-April), this is a compelling read nevertheless. It offers insight into the mind of an adolescent girl who was forced to mature long before her time – it reflects her yearnings and joys, and her sorrow and horror at what was happening to the Jews. It is also a chilling read as Rutka writes of the murder of a Jewish baby by a German soldier, and also of Rutka’s sense of foreboding and knowledge of the fate that was to befall her and the rest of her family.

Rutka may be described as the Polish Anne Frank but I feel this does a disservice to both Rutka and Anne. Anne was a tremendously gifted young writer who truly had talent, and her experiences were different than Rutka’s. Anne’s writings not only spoke of her yearnings and hopes for the future, but also portrayed a life that was suppressed in hiding. It tells of how people in hiding were forced to hide their true feelings and live amicably in confined quarters, despite their differences. Anne’s diary also covered several years in hiding, whereas Rutka’s writings cover only four months in 1943 before she was deported to Auschwitz. Rutka’s writings are significant in their own way because it provides insights into the mind of an adolescent Jewish girl who lived in Nazi-occupied territory during the period of the Holocaust, who was forced to move to cramped quarters from a previously comfortable life, but who did so openly as a Jew, not in hiding. Rutka witnessed unimaginable horrors that no human would wish to witness and though both girls perished in the Shoah, their lives were very different, and this is reflected in their writings.

Rutka’s Notebook is a compelling addition to Holocaust literature, and is especially recommended for middle school and high school libraries. I would also suggest the following titles:
Salvaged Pages: Young Writers` Diaries of the Holocaust (Yale Nota Bene)
The Diary of Petr Ginz
I Never Saw Another Butterfly
Children in the Holocaust and World War II: Their Secret Diaries
We Are Witnesses: Five Diaries of Teenagers Who Died in the Holocaust
The Diary of Eva Heyman: Child of the Holocaust

Rutka’s Notebook: A Voice from the Holocaust Overview

Rutka Laskier, a 14-year-old Jewish girl in the town of Bedzin in Poland, died in Auschwitz in 1943. But she left behind a notebook in which she recorded her thoughts, fears and dreams. Some are the musings of any adolescent girl; others are the despairing cries of an individual caught in history’s vortex. Now, after 60 years in the keeping of a friend, that notebook has been recovered – and it opens a unique, moving window into the everyday life of Polish Jews caught in the throes of Adolf Hitler’s Final Solution. Hailed as the “Polish Anne Frank,” Rutka Laskier now speaks to us across the decades: a witness to evil, a voice for the silent, and a timeless symbol of resolve. The editors of TIME add annotations, photos, maps, and quotations that help bring this tragic era into compelling focus for today’s readers.

Moleskine Info Book Pocket Review

This is a very unusual product and I would strongly encourage anyone considering getting one to be completely aware of what it is before they purchase it. I would call one’s attention to the title of the product. It is a “Notebook.” That means that most of the pages are blank. This literally is a book for taking notes in.

For some people this is going to be an absolutely useless product. But for many this will be remarkably useful. I can envision two uses for this notebook. First, those who are planning a trip to one of the places for which Moleskine has produced a book. Let’s say one has consulted the Blue guide, the Eyewitness Guide (by DK), a Rough Guide, the Michelin guide, and the Let’s Go guide. Maybe you’ve bought all of these, making for five guides. No way do you want to drag all of these on your trip or more than one on your flight. So what might you do? You might take the Moleskin Notebook, record into it all the places you want to see, restaurants you want to dine at, museums you want to stroll through, and anything else you want to do while in your destination of choice, and record it there. So the Moleskine City Notebook can serve as a distillation of all the various travel guides, web sites, and other resources you have consulted. And instead of hauling about a large Fodor’s guide, you can carry about this small Notebook that can easily fit into a backpack, purse, should bag, or even pocket.

The only downside is that the Moleskine City Notebook is only as good as you make it. If you do a good job of planning your trip, it will be filled to the brim with useful and helpful information. If not, it will be as unhelpful as you have made it.

There is a second use to which the City Notebook can be put to use, though it is not one for which it was primarily designed. You could use it for the city in which you live. I live, for instance, in Chicago. I have bought one of these so that I can over time use it to record every bit of helpful information that I might find useful or helpful. I can record what hours the Seminary Co-Op Bookstore (the real one, not the trade version on 57th Street) is open. The hours for the Chicago Public Library and the Newberry Library. Phone numbers of restaurants and addresses of bars. And so on and so forth. Granted, these books will only benefit those who live in one of those cities, but for the U.S. New York, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles are pretty populated areas.

So this is a very well conceived product though it absolutely has to be stressed that it is a specialized one. Please note: THIS ISN’T FOR EVERYONE. If you don’t want to use the Notebook to plan your trip it is going to be very close to worthless. I’ll emphasize again: this is only as good a product as you make it. But if you use it to help you plan your trip, it could be the single item you would most loathe to be without after your notebook.

Victoria & Albert Museum Desk Diary 2009 Review

The Victoria & Albert museum in London puts out two engagement diaries every year. There is a desk diary and a smaller pocket diary. The desk diary is paperback but the cover is thick and robust and the pages are also good quality stock. Each double page spread covers one week, with a good-sized blank space for each day (the size varies depending on the other illustrations). There are 2009 and 2010 calendars up front, an integrated bookmark, a pocket at the back for storing papers and also couple of blank pages at the end of the diary for notes. There is also a list of forthcoming exhibitions scheduled at the V&A museum in 2009/2010.

Every year the V&A diaries reflect a different theme drawing from the V&A’s vast collection: recent themes have included Middle Eastern Art and vintage couture.

The theme for this year’s diary is the V&A’s jewelry collection, taking its inspiration from the V&A’s new Jewelry Gallery that opened in 2008. All kinds of jewels are featured: tiaras, brooches, necklaces, rings and bracelets. Most but not all of the jewelry dates from the 19th and 20th centuries – other pieces featured include a pendant with a cameo of Catherine of Medici, an enamelled box given by Napoleon Bonaparte to his sister, a locket with a miniature of Elizabeth 1, a pendant worn in Tudor England to protect the bearer from epilepsy. Other pages feature fashion photography by Cecil Beaton and John French or fashion advertisements. My favorite was a stunning Lalique pendant dating from 1898 with the theme of “winter wonderland”. Some of the photographs are in black and white (as they would have originally appeared), but every other page is in colour.

This is a classy and attractive desk diary. To me, it is slightly less interesting than some of the other V&A diaries of the past, but I will still enjoy using it throughout the year.

Victoria & Albert Museum Desk Diary 2009 Overview

A celebration of the jewels, gems and glamour held in the V&A Museum.
