Have you ever taken $20 out of an ATM and wondered later where it went? Start keeping a daily spending diary to keep track of where your money goes. Try it out for one week and you’ll be amazed at how much you can spend on the little things like coffee, eating out and entertainment. Here’s how to do it:

Take a blank piece of paper and create a column for each day of the week, Monday through Friday.
Put the piece of paper in your wallet or purse – somewhere where you can have it with you at all times.
Make a note of every single penny that you spend – This is very important, if you forget to write down a coffee here and a soda there, you won’t have a complete picture of how you’re spending your money by the end of the week.

At the end of the week quickly order the items that you spent money on throughout the week into the following categories: Food, transportation, entertainment, clothing, housing and other. Next add up your expenses in each category. Here’s an example of one day:

Monday

Coffee – $2.75

Food: $10.60

Bus fare – $3.00

Transportation: $3.00

Lunch – $7.85

Entertainment: $2.50

Magazine – $2.50

TOTAL: $16.10

Next, find out what percentage of your money you spend on each category by dividing the total for each category by the overall total. Following the example above, I spent 66% on food ($10.60/$16.10).

Once you have completed your calculations look carefully through your analysis. Does anything surprise you? Are you spending more money than you thought on small items? Small things, like coffee, drinks, cigarettes etc… can really add up in a week! Just think, if you spend $3 on coffee every day, that’s $21 a week or $1,092 a year! Identify these areas that surprise you and look for opportunities to cut back on your spending.

Keeping a daily spending diary is an easy way to take control over your spending and to identify some less than desirable spending habits. Also as an added bonus, by keeping a daily spending diary, you’re already halfway there in creating your own personal budget. Next week we’ll explain how to set up your budget. In the meantime, congratulations on taking an important first step! You’re on your way to learning more about Your Money and You.

TIP: Use your daily spending diary as a savings tool. After one week you should be able to easily identify some areas to cut back on your spending. The money you save will bring you one step closer to your goals of opening a business, saving for your children’s education, purchasing a home or taking a dream vacation.

Are you suffering from anxiety? Today in this article I am going to teach you a simple but powerful method for controlling anxiety.

The method that I am going to teach you for controlling anxiety is the anxiety diary. To start this method get yourself a notebook and start keeping a diary. This will be a record of any anxious feelings you and thoughts you have during the day.

There is no need to write what happens every minute of the day, but it is important that you make at least one entry per day. Don’t leave it for the end of the week and then try to remember everything that happened to you because you will not remember accurately.

When you start writing entries in your diary you will find that you will place an emphasis on the bad times and ignore the good times. This is because anxious people are usually in an extremely negative state most of the time. To prevent this from happening rate your daily experiences on a scale of 1-10 where 1 is zero anxiety and 10 is the worst possible anxiety you could imagine.

This will allow you to look at your anxiety honestly and objectively, remember you are the only person who is ever going to see this diary so be honest. After you have been keeping a diary for a few weeks you can begin studying it in order to control your anxiety. You can do this by looking for the following.

· Is there a connection between what you eat and your levels of anxiety?

· Is there a particular time of the month when you feel more anxious than usual?

· Is your anxiety getting better or worse over time?

· Looking back over old entries were things really as bad as you thought they were at the time?

· Do you notice any particular patterns to your anxiety?

Keeping an anxiety diary is a great method for controlling anxiety. Many people have gained tremendous insights from keeping one and have gone a long way to eliminating anxiety from their lives – I am sure you can have the same results.

One of the most important tools you can have in your weight loss arsenal is a food diary. Studies have shown that people who write down what they eat, lose more weight and keep it off compared to those that don’t keep one. You will need to record everything you eat and drink, how you are feeling at the time, and how it makes you feel afterwards. That way you will learn to listen to your body and will soon realise if certain foods are ‘toxic’ to you.

Everyone is different and your body will teach you to understand what its saying!, but if you dont write it down, you will forget! Writing what you ate and when will be the easy part; writing how you felt before and afterwards will be more difficult. The food diary will help you to understand what your body needs and how it reacts to different foods. Start by buying a blank notebook preferably one that will fit in your handbag so you can carry it everywhere.Make sure you have a pen though too!!!!

1. Write the date and time

2. Write what you ate and drank-be specific, include amounts ie one large chicken breast and 1 huge jacket potato. You don’t have to be spot on with weights and measurements but a guesstimate is ok. Reading labels will help you to learn amounts you are eating. Also include the amount of water you drink.

3. Write how you feel physically- anything you notice about how your body feels ie headache, stomach pain, coughing, restlessness or hunger, high energy, restful sleep, etc.

4. Write how you feel emotionally- This may be more difficult at first as ‘fine’ or ‘good’ are not specific enough. Things like anxious, bored, mad, sad, agitated or confident, excited, calm,or patient.

So your blank food diary should have 4 columns

Date and Time, What I ate/drank, How I feel physically, How I feel emotionally

Try to write it down as soon as you have eaten something rather than waiting till the end of the day, you simply wont remember everything. The physical and emotional feelings can be written whenever you feel them. For example, you may feel really energetic at lunchtime then an hour later may be sleepy.

Carry your diary with you everywhere. The more specific you can be, the more you will learn. It may seem a little daunting or tedious at first but but you may be surprised to learn that food has a bigger emotional charge than you realised. Some well known diet programmes only allow certain units of bread or meat etc and they use recording what you have eaten as away of seeing whether you have been ‘bad’. This approach sets you up for a feeling of deprivation and is why these diets dont work long term. Thy are multi billion pound companies that want you to keep coming back week in week out!

This food diary we are talking about will help you change your old beliefs, you are recording information that will help you see the connection between what you eat and how you feel. Its not about being good or bad!!! After the first week, take a look at what you have written. Do not criticise what you ate! Examine the times you ate and what meal you had then answer the following questions:

Do you eat at regular mealtimes?

Do you eat between meals?

Do you graze throughout the day?

Do you eat at the same times each day?

How long do you wait between meals or snacks?

You will soon begin to see a pattern emerging. The challenge of keeping a food diary is not about the actual writing down, it is about the understanding, learning the language of your body and its emotions. Through the diary you will soon begin to see change as you continue through the following steps. If you think progress is slow, your diary will tell you differently.

So stick with it and off you go!!!!!!!

Many people have used a paper book style diary for years and it has worked perfectly well for them. Some of them even have beautiful leather bound ones to look extra official when planning out their day. These days a lot of people would not consider a paper diary as there is plenty of diary software to use and it has almost become second nature to use the technology available to us. But what are the advantages of moving to software based diary versus a paper one? Can technology ever fully replace paper?

When using Microsoft Outlook’s diary functionality for example it is possible to share calendars with other members of staff. This means that when someone wants to request a meeting with you or find out when you are free they can simply check your calendar without every having to bother you. If you are using a book-based diary then you are the only one that can see it. People may have to interrupt you more than once to plan a single meeting. This can mean your concentration is broken and your performance decreases as a result. Reducing distractions as part of your time management can improve the quality of your work. Microsoft Outlook still allows an individual to place private appointments that nobody else can see so that lack of privacy is not an issue.

When meetings are added in this way automatic alerts and reminders can be set up to go off at a specific time interval, which the employee can set. With paper-based diaries it is necessary to continuously check for meetings or to remember the entire schedule for the day. This can lead to human error and missed appointments. A simple reminder can mean that you never have to miss a meeting or appointment again. Even if you are distracted with a task, the reminder will ensure that you are interrupted at the correct time. Since you will not have to keep an eye on the clock yourself, you will be able to give full attention and focus to the tasks you are working on. Reminders can also be set to be recurring to avoid the need to add the same thing over and over again. Additional reminders can be set for half an hour before the meeting starts to remind you to get the relevant material together before you leave.

When gathering relevant material, it may be necessary to search through emails and folders to find the appropriate emails and documents to print off. Microsoft Outlook allows you to attach as many documents and emails to a meeting request as required so that you can save time by negating the need to search. Simply open the request and open the documents attached. This functionality allows far greater efficiency especially if you have several meetings in a day. The user can feel less overwhelmed and more organised.

There used to be a problem with diaries on the computer since you could not take them with you. Nowadays, even if you do not have a laptop there are BlackBerries and PDAs that are portable and have wireless Internet connection. This allows total access all of the time. Since it is likely that you will bring a laptop or BlackBerry with you when travelling for work purposes, bringing an extra paper based diary would be cumbersome. Using the diary already present on your laptop means less weight to carry around.

There is an environmental and cost reduction advantage to technology based diaries. They reduce the amount of paper used and are cheaper since the technology already exists on the computer. The cost of a paper diary per member of the company is saved annually which can add up to a large overall saving. Meetings and appointments can be added and deleted easily and with no mess. Since the purpose of a diary is to help manage a person’s time in the most efficient and organised way, a technology-based diary would fulfil this requirement to a higher standard. Having seen various paper diaries with items scribbled out or written with ineligible handwriting on margins, a technology-based diary is more likely to give organised and skillful time management ability.

The world comprises different types of sleepers. Some fall asleep the minute their heads hit the pillow. Others lie awake for some time and ponder over the events of the day. Some people are totally uninterested in their dreams; they consider dreams to be insignificant, senseless images of the night. Others are deeply interested in dreams and consider them as symbols of great intelligence and wisdom.

If you are interested in dreams, the idea of lucid dreaming and dream control will fascinate you. You can easily learn lucid dreaming and have loads of fun in your dreams.

To learn lucid dreaming, you must study your sleep patterns and know your dreams. To know your dreams better, you ought to remember them, and the best way to learn dream recall is to maintain a dream diary.

Your dream diary is not like an ordinary diary. You must keep it by the side of your bed with a pen or a pencil near it. Place a flashlight too. Now, if you wake up at midnight with a dream fresh in your memories, you can just switch on the flashlight and make a note of it before the dream disappears in the mists of time.

Writing your dreams down immediately after waking up is of paramount importance. This is because dreams are elusive. If you postpone making an entry into your dream diary, you will never make it because you won’t remember it. Dreams should be recorded before your brain gets busy with other activities. That is why a dream diary is placed by the side of your bed.

Every night, before you go to sleep, affirm that you will remember your dreams. Write down the date in your dream diary, and go to sleep. The minute you wake up, make an entry into your diary, along with the time.

Don’t worry if you cannot remember your dreams perfectly. Write down whatever you can remember, and even if you can’t remember anything, write down what you feel at the moment. With time, you will find that your ability to remember your dreams will become better and better. And soon, you will be able to remember your dreams with ease. You might then feel the need to fill up entire pages of your diary, an exercise that might exhaust you, especially when done at midnight.

Why maintain a dream diary? Maintaining a dream diary is the first step to learn lucid dreaming. You will never be able to achieve lucidity if you cannot recall your dreams. And nothing can help you recall your dreams better than a dream diary.

Keeping a Nature Journal: Discover a Whole New Way of Seeing the World Around You Overview

From the day it was released in 2000, Keeping a Nature Journal has struck a profound chord among professional, casual, and occasional naturalists of all ages. In response to this groundswell of enthusiasm, we have revised KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL, updated the interior design, and created a new cover. Undoubtedly the most exciting new element in this second edition is a portfolio of 32 illustrated pages from Clare Walker Leslie’s most recent journals, reproduced in full color.

What makes KEEPING A NATURE JOURNAL so popular? It is inspiring and easy to use. Clare and co-author Charles “Chuck” E. Roth offer simple techniques to give first-time journal-keepers the confidence to go outside, observe the natural world, and sketch and write about what they see. At the same time, they motivate long-time journal-keepers to hone their powers of observation as they immerse themselves in the mysteries of the natural world. Clare and Chuck stress that the journal is a personal record of daily experience and the world around us. Nature’s beauty can be observed everywhere, whether in the city, suburbs, or country.

One of the most powerful tools in weight loss success, apart from eating correctly and adequate exercise, is keeping a food log or nutritional journal. A nutritional journal is basically a record of what you ate every day and helps you to asses your eating patterns, while identifying potential unhealthy patterns.

It’s both scary and amazing to see, in black and white just how much food you are consuming every day. While you may think you’re eating too little, or not eating any “junk food”, having a record of it in your food diary will ensure that you know exactly what you’ve eaten, which may help you get to the root of any weight problems.

Keeping a record of your food intake, not only helps you identify your eating patterns now, but it may also be a very handy tool in helping you create a nutritional program that keeps you satisfied, happy and healthy.

Here are a few helpful tips to help you start your own nutritional journal:

* Write it ALL down: Whether you ate “healthy food” or not, write it down. By excluding foods you think make you look bad, you will only be cheating yourself.

* Don’t forget the little things: Things like coffee, sugar, soft drinks, juices, milk, sauces, dressings and gravies all add up, so don’t forget to document when you ate these too.

* Quantity: It is important to write down how much and which foods you ate. Now this doesn’t mean you have to go around with a scale attached to your pocket, but remember to note the size of the portion, for instance, half a cup of brown rice with about 200g of fillet steak and 2 tablespoons of creamy pepper sauce.

* Mood monitor: It’s a good idea to record your mood and how each food made you feel. For instance, if you were in a stressful meeting with the boss and ate a chocolate straight after, you can pinpoint that when you are feeling stressed you eat chocolate. This may seem silly at first but it really helps you pinpoint emotional problems.

Journaling and diary-keeping has been around for hundreds of years. In fact, through personal diaries we have been able to discover information about the creation of our country and government, as well as the people who lived during this time period. We have been able to learn about the lives of historical figures throughout the world. There is astonishing value in keeping a journal and if you read what you write, you may learn a lot about yourself as well. Through your journal you will experience the many benefits of writing on a regular basis. Here are several of the benefits that you will be able to experience.

ACHIEVING GOALS

A journal can help you to clarify your goals and will allow you to write about your achievements as well as your ideas. This allows you to see the steps that you have taken towards your goal and will allow you to see where you stand as well as how much further you have to go to complete your goals. Your goals may be simple tasks in life or they may be life goals that will take more time to achieve. Whatever goals you set for yourself, be sure that they are attainable and easily documented in your journal.

SIMPLIFYING LIFE

A journal or diary is very useful in helping to simplify your life. We tend to make life much more complicated than it needs to be. We have appointments, soccer practice with the kids and a million other things that we have to do on a daily basis. By carving out ten minutes of your day and taking the time to sit down with a pen and a piece of paper it is amazing at how you begin to see what is really important in life. You can also carve out a few minutes to type in a journal entry on a personal blog or even a simple and ongoing Word document. Take the time to describe your values, note your achievements and think of those things that you are grateful for in your life.

CLARIFY AND STRENGTHEN RELATIONSHIPS

Journals have amazing power and much of this power can be seen through your personal relationships. Journaling allows you to take the time you need to express your feelings about your life and relationships. Journaling also allows you a private place to vent about any frustrations you have with your relationships. Journaling allows you to see why you might be bothered by certain aspects of a person and even how you might be able to change how you handle certain situations. They can also teach you to love more powerfully and with more conviction. There are various aspects to relationships, and your journal can allow you to see what changes you can make to your strengthen your relationships.

LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF

Socrates was a firm believer in “know thyself.” A journal allows you to do just that. You can talk about your morals, values and other beliefs. This allows you to clarify what you think about on certain topics as well as express yourself more clearly. If anybody has ever asked you about a specific topic or controversy and what you think about it, you will be able to easily spout off a clear opinion in a matter of seconds. You will present yourself as a person who knows themself well.

BECOMING A BETTER COMMUNICATOR

Journaling can also aid in making you a better writer. Many people could easily be better writers if they spent a few minutes a day working on it. Even when you write about personal information you are able to strengthen your skills. You are also able to strengthen your grammar, vocabulary and get you through a moment of writer’s block you are experiencing. It can also be a place to write down any new words or ideas you might have to write about. Clear communication allows you to provide a powerful image and offers the utmost in personal expression.

HEALTH BENEFITS

The health benefits of journaling are widely psychological. Journaling is able to counteract the negative effects of stress and can be a great tool for stress management. Additionally, journaling can help people explore traumatic events and release the emotions that are involved with those experiences.

Research has also shown that there are various other health benefits as well. Scientific studies show that the symptoms of asthma, arthritis and other health conditions have all decreased due to journaling. It has also been shown to help improve the immune system and may prevent a host of diseases. According to one such study by Stony Brook University in New York, written expression of traumatic experiences can aid individuals suffering from other health problems (such as breast cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia). The study reported that the patients experienced short-term benefits both psychologically and physically. They were also able to see significant reductions in pain and fatigue (the groups in the study wrote in the laboratory for 20 minutes for 3 days at 1-week intervals and were assessed pretreatment, post treatment, at 4 months and at 10 months).

Journaling is also a form of meditation. This is a time that you can use to be quiet and write down what is on your mind. There are often things that may be too hurtful to say to someone, but you have to get it off your mind. Journaling is an excellent outlet for that type of worry or frustration. Have you ever heard of writing a letter to someone to get your true feelings out, but then not sending it? This is the same type of idea. You can write out those feelings and then seal them away in your journal. Journaling also helps you to relax and be quiet. It has the power to help you relax, release anxiety and make your life much easier.

Journaling can be a unique and life changing experience. As you can see through these various benefits that your life can become much simpler and much more focused. The opportunity for self-growth is among the best benefit and those who suffer from serious ailments have found that journaling allows them to release the pain that the illness causes them. To take advantage of these benefits, InboxJournal.com is a unique website that allows you to journal privately or publicly on the web. You are able to set up a regular journaling schedule so that you are able to receive the long-term benefits that journaling provides.
